Desertaire Elementary has been designated an Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing National Blue Ribbon School for 2020 by the U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. We are one of 367 schools in the nation and one of 28 schools from Texas to be recognized in 2020.

Test Improvement
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, commonly referred to as its acronym STAAR, are a series of state-mandated standardized tests used to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in the grade level. These tests are administered to 3rd through 5th grade students in the area of Math, Reading and Science in the spring of the current school year. Based on the spring of 2022 test results, our current and previous students improved their scores and scoring the campus an A district wide. This could not have been possible without the help of our teachers, staff and parents for their hard work and dedication.

Gifted and Talented
Ysleta Independent School District’s Gifted and Talented program is committed to providing exemplary educational opportunities that recognize the unique, social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students. The Ysleta Independent School District is committed to serving the unique needs of intellectually gifted students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds through an array of qualitatively different learning opportunities. Identified students will demonstrate the ability to interpret and evaluate information; use the process of inquiry to solve problems and abstract concepts.  Students function in a total learning environment, make choices based on data collection and interpretation, self-knowledge of needs and interests, assume responsibility for choices and decisions, and work effectively with others to solve problems.

Challenges are solved using a hands-on approach – allowing teams to apply their knowledge to real life problems. The goal of the program is for students to carry these important skills into their everyday lives while incorporating creativity, imagination, and engineering along the way. All challenges are aligned with current TEKS standards with a heavy emphasis on S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) education.

Volunteer Program
We encourage parents and community members to participate in our volunteer program to help meet the needs of our students and campus. With the help of our volunteers, our school dances, Wellness Wednesday and community events have been a huge success. The Purple Star Campus Designation recognizes Texas districts that show their support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families. 

SmallLab Learning
We are 1 of 4 schools in the Ysleta Independent School District to have a SMALLab in our campus. SMALLab is a 3D mixed reality learning environment where students actively engage both their mind and body to learn new and/or challenging subjects, rather than solely listening to lectures and/or watching demonstrations. It’s an approach to teaching we call embodied learning.
