Students compete at Texas Science & Engineering Fair at Texas A&M.

Several Ysleta ISD students recently competed at the Texas Science and Engineering Fair at Texas A&M University in College Station, winning top marks in their categories among their peers statewide! Our outstanding science-fair champions and their winning projects are:

·      Valle Verde Early College High School students Ana Sofia Chavarria and Sarah Galindro, who placed second in the Biochemistry category for their project, “Medicine in the Nanosphere: Evaluating the Toxicity of Red Gold, Blue Gold, and Silver Nanoparticles with and without the Addition of Sodium Thiosulfates on Daphnia Magna and Baker Yeast, with the Development of a Transdermal Microneedle Patch for Nanoparticle Administration.” The students are under the direction of teacher Sarah Welsh.

·      Eastwood Middle School student Ethan Waite, who placed third in the category of Cellular and Molecular Biology for a project entitled, “Cellular Contrasts: The Impact of Smoking on Our Body's Building Blocks.” Ethan is under the direction of teacher Esmeralda Lara.

With their second-place finish, Ana and Sarah were invited to attend the weeklong Governor's Science and Technology Champions Academy (GSTCA), which is funded through a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission and covers all expenses for participants, including registration, room and board in dorms, meals, and research materials for the academy.

While at Texas A&M for the Fair, students had the opportunity to visit the Zachry Engineering Education Complex to explore innovative STEM projects and participate in interactive activities. This experience not only enhanced their passion for science, but also exposed them to future educational opportunities beyond El Paso.

Other Ysleta ISD students who participated in the state Fair included:

Alicia Chacon International School

Luis Cruz-Rivera & Amara Valles (under the direction of teacher Daniel Mendoza)
