Martin Segovia, Director of Athletics at the Ysleta Independent School District, has been recognized by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) for becoming a Certified Athletic Administrator, demonstrating he has among the highest levels of expertise in his field.

Segovia, who has served as Ysleta ISD’s athletic director since 2021, is now one of an elite group of interscholastic athletic administrators nationwide to attain this level of professional certification, NIAAA officials said.

“I am grateful that Ysleta ISD supports education-based athletics, and I believe it is very important for leaders to remain active members of their professional organizations,” said Segovia, who began his career in education in 1995 as a social studies/physical education teacher and has since gone on to serve as a family literacy liaison, coach, assistant principal, adjunct professor, and assistant athletic director.

Segovia’s distinction comes after he successfully completed a rigorous, comprehensive exam through NIAAA’s Certified Athletic Administrator program, which also evaluated his background, experience, and professional contributions.

The program ensures that athletic leaders are equipped to create safe, supportive environments that complement students’ academic and athletic development, which Segovia says ultimately enhances the overall quality and success of Ysleta ISD’s programs.

“The NIAAA provides valuable networking opportunities, access to industry best practices, and professional development resources,” Segovia said, “I’m thankful Ysleta ISD supports my efforts to seek out these opportunities to remain current within my field.”

Segovia holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and a master’s degree in science from Kansas State University.

NIAAA champions the profession of athletic administration through education opportunities, advocating ethics, developing leaders, and fostering community, and aims to build enriching environments that encourage valuable life lessons, participation, and competition for middle- and high-school students.
