For the first time ever, the Ysleta Independent School District has won the 2024-2025 Premier Communities for Theatre Education Award from the Texas Thespians, a statewide group that promotes excellence in theatre education and student achievement.
Ysleta ISD was honored for the district’s outstanding commitment to providing its theatre programs with the resources to achieve above standard.
This is the first theatre distinction for Ysleta ISD from Texas Thespians, due in great part to the dedicated teachers who share knowledge and expertise with students every day, as well as campus and district administrators who support theatre programs with their exceptional leadership
Research on theatre education continues to demonstrate numerous educational benefits across student populations, student age levels, and learning environments. Theatre education provides several social benefits including teamwork skills, how to give and receive constructive criticism, problem-solving, trust, cooperation, and collaboration.
Additionally, theatre education helps students develop a strong sense of self, build empathy and understanding amongst peers, and broaden their knowledge of the world around them while preparing them for future careers.
To qualify for the award, Ysleta ISD staff answered detailed questions on numerous topics, including curriculum; scheduling standards; class sizes; facilities; theatre safety; technical equipment; production elements; overall support for the theatre program; and Thespian troupe involvement.
Texas Thespians, a Gold Honor Chapter of the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), is the largest chapter in the nation. It provides local, state, and regional support for adult members, Thespians, and Junior Thespians, representing more than 16,000 middle- and high-school students with more than 600 troupes.
