Eastwood High School students Leslie Chavez and Brisa Gutierrez and Young Women's Leadership Academy (YWLA) student Melina Balcorta-Alva have each won a $2,000 college scholarship from the Texas Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (TALAS) El Paso Scholarship Committee.
Leslie, Brisa, and Melina were among 75 students to apply for this year’s scholarships, which are awarded to promote academic excellence and offer opportunities for students to accomplish their educational and career goals.
In considering this year’s recipients, TALAS officials said they were looking for “the sparks of innovation, the seeds of leadership, and the genuine commitment to making a positive impact,” adding that they firmly believe investing in education is an investment in the future and they are proud to contribute to the journey of future leaders like Melina, Brisa, and Leslie.
TALAS El Paso will host a scholarship reception for all six winners on Jan. 17.
